Germany, 16th century. Adelheid, the beautiful and cold wife of the high-ranking August von Walldorf, is the linchpin in a plot to overthrow the German Emperor Karl. In his place should come the French king Francis I, with whom Adelheid is having a secret affair. One day robber baron Götz von Berlichingen becomes unwillingly involved in the plot when he and his men rob a heavily guarded carriage. The gang loot three chests full of French gold coins, bearing the king's seal. When Götz is finally back at his castle after a tumultuous journey home, it turns out that his old childhood friend Adelbert von Weislingen is unexpectedly visiting. Adelbert urgently advises Götz to return the gold as soon as possible. What nobody knows is that Adelbert has been completely captivated by the beautiful Adelheid for a while, and that she even ordered him to kill Götz and retrieve the gold - her gold...
