Götz von Berlichingen plot
Germany, 16th century. Adelheid, the beautiful and cold wife of the high-ranking August von Walldorf, is the linchpin in a plot to overthrow the German Emperor Karl. In his place should come the French king Francis I, with whom Adelheid is having a secret affair. One day robber baron Götz von Berlichingen becomes unwillingly involved in the plot when he and his men rob a heavily guarded carriage. The gang loot three chests full of French gold coins, bearing the king's seal. When Götz is finally back at his castle after a tumultuous journey home, it turns out that his old childhood friend Adelbert von Weislingen is unexpectedly visiting. Adelbert urgently advises Götz to return the gold as soon as possible.
