In England, around 1830, a young man from a good but troubled family is wrongly convicted of stealing a watch. He is banished to Van Diemen's Land. There he has to deal with the hostile Lieutenant Frere, while he falls in love with Sylvia, the Lieutenant's daughter. Meanwhile, an impostor in England tries to steal the young man's inheritance.
