Des Christoffel von Grimmelshausen Abenteuerlicher Simplicissimus plot

Simplicius "Simplex" Simplizzimus is a farmer's son who got his name from his simple personality. In the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648) he loses his parents and his home, after which he embarks on an adventurous journey. He meets a hermit who teaches him to read and write. After his death, Simplex ends up in the fortress of Hanau, where he is forced to play the court jester. With the help of Ulrich, who becomes his faithful companion, he manages to escape. His further adventures lead him to a treasure of gold, love and Paris.
