Quite hopeless.

Coincidentally, I recently dug into the 1959 version again. Quite an example of the mega productions being made at the time, and apart from the occasionally mind-boggling statistics, you can actually see that reflected in the rest of the film. And of course this modern and relatively economically justifiable budgeted rush job cannot compete with that.

The easiest proof of which can still be found in the race - it is not a comparison, I think. Some fiddling with gopros against a good and strong concept in a real arena. And most astonishingly, a Ben-Hur race without cheating wheels, it's like a meal without salt, like the Fat without the Thin, like Gert without Hermien.

And what I can't get over is the way the story has been improved. Less revenge, more reconciliation, that's the idea, but for me that definitely didn't work out - I thought it had become a soulless limp, from which both the religious and the revenge/forgiveness motive no longer emerged.

In short, hopeless. But that was actually clear from the start. Where I want to make a small positive point as a closing - this is the first movie in quite a long time in which Morgan Freeman didn't irritate me - not that he plays badly or anything, but it's just about always the same, and always cliche. That is on the verge of good.

“You should have stayed away.”
“You should have killed me.”

Soulless is the right word. Ben Hur (the 1959 version) is my father's favorite movie, so I watched it many times when I was a kid. It all felt lived and real. The movie was too long, but that gave it an epic touch. This remake is smooth and beautifully made, but feels inspirational and lifeless. It all looks too slick. The actors do their best, but you forget about them a second after the film. There is no new Charlton Heston among...

The “racing scene” is heavily filmed, but the tension is hard to find. The film's biggest flaw is its emphasis on forgiveness rather than revenge. Fine in itself, but it is delivered in such a sentimental and sweet way that it seems made rather than genuine. The mother and sister are consumed by leprosy, but in the end they suddenly become friends with the traitor again. And anyone who has it in their mind to end Ben Hur with a sweet pop song should be banned from the film industry forever.

Making a remake of a classic is always daring. This film doesn't even come close to the level of the original, but opinions are not divided on that either. Actually, this is a far cry from the original, with a few minor highlights.

The main problem with this film is that the storytelling style is too rushed. The whole story must be told within two hours, with the result that the film flies from scene to scene without developing anything.

The famous chariot race is not as impressive as that of the original, but for me still the highlight of an otherwise weak film.

No idea why this ever had to be remade, but this can be called a real miss.

Fail.
