Ships have been attacked and destroyed in various places in the oceans, but no one knows by whom or what. Scientist Pierre Arronax has a theory that it is a submarine creature that has grown to phenomenal size. Together with his friend Cabe Attucks, he goes in search of the creature.

This was the second of two competing adaptations of Jules Verne's novel, released in 1997. The first was 20,000 Leagues under the Sea by Hallmark. Michael Caine loved the novel and jumped at the chance to play Captain Nemo. Ken Senga's voice was dubbed by Doug Stone.

Just like its predecessor, this version has some adjustments. Captain Nemo's daughter Mara and Cube Attucks do not appear in the novel, but were incorporated specifically for this version. Such an adaptation takes some getting used to, but I found it slightly better than director Michael Anderson's version. Yet such changes remain completely unnecessary, and only the names of the characters and the title remain the same. Unfortunately again an unnecessary remake without success.
