Shen Lian is an imperial guard at the time of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), at the end of the Ming glory (1627). Shen Lian is a member of the military organization Jinyiwei, and as such, he must uncover the truth behind a conspiracy before the conspirators turn him, his colleague Pei Lun, and young swordsman Bei Ji as the suspects of the same conspiracy. To prove their innocence and find the real culprits, the trio enlist the help of a painter and her allies.
