The promotional material of The Meg - trailer, poster, taglines - makes you think that the film is deliberately cheesy, with a big wink. But if you expect such a film, you will be quite disappointed. To my surprise, The Meg was completely humorless. At least, there were attempts at some standard comic relief, but it really isn't funny for a second. And with a premise in which you pit Jason Statham against a giant shark, it's almost amazing how such a boring dime-a-dozen print comes out. The people behind the promotion apparently had a different - more fun - film in mind.

The Meg is at its worst when things get quite dramatic. As the film progresses, we see Jason Statham standing in the shower in slow motion and staring melancholy ahead. Every time the shark swallows someone, it's not a cause for cheering in the audience, but we are treated to sad main characters, as if the slaughter cattle that die must do something to us. It will be even more beautiful if we always get a love interest for Statham and he builds a bond with a - pitifully acting - little girl. The makers seem to want to please the general public and make The Meg a kind of family film version of Jaws. Agree, certain sequences with the oversized shark are somewhat entertaining, but the film takes itself way too seriously. This could have been really nice pulp or at least so bad it's fun. But The Meg is none of this, it's a hugely interchangeable action movie, with only a handful of decent scenes.

2 stars.

Nice.

It's a bit of a shame that they added horror as a genre here, because of course it wasn't real. Also a bit difficult with a beast that can swallow half a bunch of people at once. You can hope that for a lot of gore and blood, but where does that come from? Such a thing of 30 meters is really not going to nibble on an arm.

Well, illogical criticism, but the film itself does not contain too much logic. He is more concerned with the entertainment, that much is clear. Everyone (and the movie itself) likes to refer to Jaws, but the beginning reminded me more of a movie like The Abyss actually.

Also liked the cast, international affair. The fact that English is spoken a bit tougher is not so bad, Li Bingbing is even allowed to say something in Chinese now and then, in other words there is also quite a bit of Chinese money behind this film.

It's not great or genius, but the pace is nice and fast, the film fortunately doesn't take itself too seriously and despite the fact that it could have been a little shorter, the film also never manages to get boring or slow. I like these kind of blockbusters.

3.5*

A monstrously entertaining film, certainly with the necessary depth. Very interesting. A little cloudy here and there. Especially at the low points. But when I put on my glasses it went fine again now and then it is really gasping for breath until they are above water again after some action. All in all, an entertaining movie if you don't have high expectations. If you choose this on a random Sunday evening, you won't get wet
