The Instigators plot
"Boston's most wanted. And least qualified."
Desperate father Rory reluctantly joins forces with Cobby, an ex-criminal, to carry out a heist on the ill-earned income of a corrupt politician. When the heist goes wrong, the unlikely duo are caught in a whirlwind of chaos. They are pursued not only by the police, but also by bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Disappointed, expected more. Damon, Affleck and director Liman are good buddies, but prove that the statement of football guru JC (you shouldn't work with friends) may contain a kernel of truth after all.
An action comedy with too little good action but especially a lack of relativizing humor. Damon and especially Affleck as a duo are not exactly laughing, you can feel that there is underlying chemistry but it does not jump off the screen. The biggest culprit that this does not work completely is the substandard script, which constantly jumps from one topic to another. A few well-known actors in the supporting roles (Molina, Rhames, Sthulbarg, Perlman, Jones) who hardly get the chance to make something of it. Insufficient also for Liman, who once gave us such an intense action series about a certain Jason Bourne, but here he just can't seem to choose what exactly he wants. At its best, The Instigators is nothing more than a nice snack, one that you quickly forget, in terms of running time just short enough not to get annoyed by it.

An entertaining action comedy that is more a collection of funny scenes than a nicely balanced story. There is something like a common storyline, but it serves more as a wobbly foothold on which numerous sketches are hung. Soon after the start of the film it becomes clear that other things are more important than telling a solid story. The pleasant interactions between Matt Damon and Casey Affleck, for example. Or the many (running) gags that are mostly quite funny. I enjoyed myself with the sketch-like setup.
The film focuses on entertainment and does touch on some serious themes, but does not go into depth with them. Corruption is such a theme. The elections for mayor are also such a theme. The subjects could have been developed more prominently. The themes are touched upon and mainly serve as a reason for the complications in which the characters find themselves. The subject remains untouched. I did not miss the profound approach so much as the biting humor that cuts such a theme just as sharply.
The Instigators is an entertaining film. The humor is nice and the characters are too. The film is full of unpredictable twists and turns and does not bore. The pace is quite fast so that moments of slump are hardly recognizable. The action is good with chases and shootouts. The action-packed finale is also something to behold. The Instigators offers great entertainment.

Reasonable action comedy. The story is not very special but it can pass. The execution is entertaining. The pace is fine and the film is easy to watch. The action is not very explosive but doable. You won't laugh out loud either, but there are some nice moments. In that respect, the film is well balanced and it is a somewhat serious action comedy that mainly relies on the nice and funny characters. Nice in-between. 3.0
