The Bluff plot
"Betrayal cuts deep."
It's the late 19th century, long after the heyday of piracy. Ercell Bodden is a former pirate who escaped her violent past as "Bloody Mary" to live a quiet family life on a remote island in the Caymans. When her murderous former crew tracks her down to reclaim stolen gold, she must reclaim her old, violent identity to protect her home and loved ones.

Oh well. A typical one-man-army action film. In a pirate guise and with a woman instead of a man. But otherwise, the usual ingredients: stupid action and meaningless dialogue and one-liners. It's painful how dozens of cannon fodder can't even scratch the main villain when he's completely alone, because they're dumber than a brain-damaged goat.
And then there's this so-called happy ending. Even though half a village is wiped out when it really only should have cost one life. But hey, the hero, right?
Anyway. You know in advance that this kind of film has a flimsy plot and is riddled with stupidity. And it all looks pretty polished.
So we shouldn't be too critical. But these days, I really can't give a film like this three stars. Just half a star less, then.

Well.
A pirate film, but not really. The Bluff is just a formulaic, run-of-the-mill action film like so many others on streaming services. The pirate storyline is a minor detail. It's not adventurous at all. The story quickly reaches an impasse when "Bloody Mary" is more or less literally imprisoned. The inevitable clash is preceded by the equally inevitable death of the captured husband and, surprisingly, an old-fashioned montage, complete with voiceover, after which the children also get their roles. It's not all that impressive, but I had hoped for more, especially since the film is much more serious in tone than I had anticipated.

Great, finally a pirate movie, though the result is unfortunately a bit disappointing. Plenty of action, but by now, a filmmaker needs to come up with better fight choreography to make an impression. The plot and characters aren't particularly compelling either. A shame, because this had some potential.
