The Assistant plot
After the police find hard drugs in his car, Zafik is sent to prison for ten years. However, he continues to insist that the drugs are not his. After two years in prison, his friend Sam hears the terrible news that his son and wife have been murdered. After his release, he is determined to bring the perpetrators to justice. Back in the free world, he meets Sam again, who is now a bigwig in a big company. To raise money, Zafik raises protection money for Sam from local small businesses. He gets help from Feroz, a cousin of his late wife. They couldn't be more different: Zafik communicates with words, Feroz with fists. The two are getting closer and closer to the perpetrators with their methods.

Director Adrian Teh seems to want to contribute to the other Asian fight films through Malaysia, but waits far too long with the final spectacle. The first hour mainly consists of the interaction between Iedil Dzuhrie Alaudin and Hairul Azreen. The history to better justify the second half is also explained in detail, but Teh adds so little originality and passion to this story that it mainly becomes a stretching experience. Visually, The Assistant uses color fortunately enough to provide the film with a fairly modern slant and the action-packed second half is easily captivating. The plot twist is somewhat arbitrary and forced, but once the stops are opened, Teh manages to create a reasonably entertaining film. Unfortunately, 124 minutes is far too long to bring an event like this to the screen and the film lacks some more dynamic direction to give the action scenes some extra power.
