West goes to China.

It's really special how directors who have their highlights somewhere in Hollywood end up somewhere like in China. Not that Chinese cinema is that bad, but you wouldn't think that an English director would work in a completely different country. In any case, it is mediocre for him, just a bit below his level.

There is no shortage of entertainment in this film, because after just under 30 minutes the volcano spews out quite a bit of natural violence. That produces quite a few spectacular and spectacular images, but with those images the logic disappears every second. This film is way over the top and where I normally love it, I found it a bit harder to swallow with this film.

It also takes itself painfully seriously and becomes way too sentimental at times that don't ask for it. Of course disaster movies like this come with the necessary dose of drama, but for such a ridiculous concept there is also something to laugh about, and this film has no lightness whatsoever, leaving you only with a big punch of action.

The effects also look a bit wooden and the concept of a kind of volcano amusement park is only used in the first part of the film, after that it's all-out action but of a kind that rarely succeeds. Despite an exuberant approach, this film feels very small, and the greenscreens are not always well concealed.

The acting is subpar and crew members like Isaacs are probably just messing around for promotion. What saves the film is a nice pace, but the content is pretty silly, and the credits where another song is sung should not have been in it. Ideal entertainment with enough spectacle, but as empty as the volcano that erupted in the film.

Not a bad movie, but all a bit overdone and predictable. Nicely made though.

Jack Harris [Jason Isaacs] has converted a volcanic island that erupted several years ago into a tourist attraction because, he argues, it will now take hundreds of years for another eruption to occur. Meng Li [Hannah Quinlivan], whose mother [Alice Rietveld] died in that eruption and who barely survived the disaster herself, is among the scientists who conclude that the volcano is about to erupt again. Rip-off from Jurassic Park with as a special bonus every cliché from Irvin Winkler's exhausted disaster movies. There is no question of originality and the special effects are to the
