Shôgun Iemitsu no Ranshin - Gekitotsu plot

During the feudal Japanese period, the shogun's son, Takechiyo, and his men are attacked by monks. Takechiyo is rescued by ronin Igo Gyobu's gang and sets out on a journey to Edo under their protection. However, they have to deal with the samurai warlord Shozaemon Iba and his inexhaustible military strength who want to kill the boy, the only heir.

And it's about time there was a Chiba collection, although this is still just a sample from his entire career... Strange that they chose to single this one out, as Chiba doesn't have much screen time. This is also a nice adventure film in which a group of ronin have to protect the son of a mad shogun and bring him to Edo, while his own father wants him dead to give the succession to another son.

Action and adventure scenes follow at a rapid pace to an unexpectedly grim ending. The 1980s are not my favorite period when it comes to Japanese films, but this one was a stroke of luck. The ugly falls of the horses were not nice... Not the most animal-friendly film.
