A sleazy European thriller with clear international ambitions, featuring an international cast and exotic locations (Switzerland, Pakistan). It is an opportunity to see Jean Seberg (the director's partner at the time) at work alongside James Mason. The film has a complex plot. The noir and James Bond influences are evident. Yet, it also has a psychedelic edge—fitting the heroin theme—with several scenes you have to see to believe. Here, we see blues legend Memphis Slim at work at the piano, surrounded by naked women and porn/drug dealers. The bombastic mass slaughter at the end also has to be seen to be believed. Delightfully over the top. That is what makes this film stand out from the crowd.

The director made two versions of this film: one with nude scenes and one with neatly dressed actors (for 'Reformed' and 'Catholic' audiences, respectively). I watched the more revealing version myself, even though I was raised Catholic .
Also worth mentioning is the amazing soundtrack by Berto Pisano and Jacques Chaumont in the style of that era, with swinging rhythms, fuzzy guitars, seductive vocals, etc.

One for cult movie lovers!
