El Chicano is a film that made me think: I've seen this before. It has all sorts of recognizable elements, and that's how it forms a film. To be honest, I didn't find much of it.

Not really interesting.

I still had some confidence in it beforehand. But I think I hadn't read it thoroughly and therefore had different expectations. I expected a story set in the future with a rise in crime and a single vigilante wiping out crime.

But ultimately, you're faced with a somewhat grittier crime story that verges on the dull rather than the exciting. I'd hoped for a polished, fast-paced action film, but what you get is a slightly subtle crime film that's not exactly fast-paced.

Another one that lacks a lot of guts in terms of direction. Granted, it's a bit subtle, but the director could still push that. However, they don't. The dialogue lacks a lot of sharpness, the pace is too slow, and the action is shot rather detachedly.

The tone could also have been much higher in terms of gore and graphicness. The film doesn't really pull any punches and avoids most of the violence, except for a few slightly harsher images. But those images aren't harsh enough for the tone. The pace also completely drops off after 30 minutes, which eventually leads to boredom.

The direction simply lacks the balls. Just show that brutality. However, the film does have some decent settings here and there. It was nice that the film still looks flashy. The final scene in the rain was also quite cool. The acting isn't bad either.

I'll still give it a 2.0* for that, but everything could have been a bit better. El Chicano, in particular, has the potential to be a cool character, but isn't.
