Delicious. A film from the time when people still knew how an action film should be made. Not of Heat level, of course, but he reminded me a little bit of it. The film beautifully shows the Japanese metropolis with its advertising boards combined with a dark atmosphere. Garcia played extraordinarily well, not even just the handsome Italian (yes, I know he's Cuban descent), but this time as the rough-and-tumble youngster. Also strong magic between Douglas and Takakura, 'Mrs Chicago' who could have had a little more airtime and a nice, but not fantastic, representation of the clash between American and Japanese culture.

“Sugai-san, I am the solution... to your problems.”

Great police thriller by Ridley Scott. Black Rain does a lot of things right, and from the start it's all mostly dark, rainy and gray. The story is not very special, but the atmosphere and the acting make up for a lot. The differences between Japan and America are briefly touched upon, and especially the bond between Douglas and Garcia is well developed. Not a masterpiece, but Black Rain shows that Scott can handle even a standard police thriller very well.

Visually beautiful crime film in which, in addition to director Ridley Scott, director of photography Jan De Bont certainly deserves a mention. Not coincidentally, this eighties smasher contains some exciting motorbike chase sequences.

Tight script with more than convincing acting by Michael Douglas, Andy Garcia and the Japanese colleague Ken Takakura. Wonderful electro analog soundtrack by Hans Zimmer. Who could ask for more?

Besides tension, the film now and then contains a pinch of (cynical) humor that often has to do with the translation troubles in Japan. Also nice to see how the film has been packed with observations about Japanese culture, of course from a Western Hollywood point of view, and the clash with the all American cops. Of course you should not take the latter too seriously, because it is still a police thriller and not an anthropological study.
