David Harbour believes it is actually a good thing that the production on Marvel's Thunderbolts movie has shut down for the time being.
Since 2 May 2023, several productions both in film and television have been impacted by the strike of the Writers Guild of America. The two main reasons for the strike are residual payments from streaming media and the potential influence of AI chatbot, ChatGPT.
One of the numerous movies impacted is Thunderbolts, which stars Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Wyatt Russell as John Walker/U.S. Agent, Olga Kurylenko as Antonia Dreykov/Taskmaster, Hannah John-Kamen as Ava Starr/Ghost and Julia Louis-Dreyfuss Contessa Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.
While the strike is going on, writers are not allowed to work on scripts and Harbour, who previously appeared as Red Guardian in Black Widow, reckons the movie shouldn't be worked on at all if that can't happen as Marvel is known for amending and improving scripts while the production is ongoing.
"Black Widow, the entire third act was reworked as we were shooting, which was incredible. So they just want that freedom," he said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast.
"The script we have is really tight and really great and our director Jake thinks it's great but they just want the freedom, they don't wanna be stuck in the middle of a shoot and be having to go like, 'you know, we can't rewrite this,'" he said.
"I started working on it already and it's phenomenal, it's hard to talk about these projects because I sound like such a dumb idiot because all I say is, 'that's great, the script is great' but it's true!"
The Thunderbolts are 'losers'
On ComicBook.com's Phase Zero podcast, Harbour was asked about how the movie would be different from other MCU films.
And, he responded by saying that Thunderbolts will effectively focus on a bunch of losers.
"We're like losers, which I like. We're the losers. I think it's fun to watch us just mess everything up," he said.
"It's very funny, there's also a lot of pathos in that. There's a lot of drama in a bunch of people who just keep getting their lives wrong and — because of character flaws — keep messing things up. Nobody gives them the respect that they do to Captain America and Iron Man, very capable people.
"So there's a lot to draw on there. I think there's a lot of movie there that will be fun. It has all this cool action and cool comedy from what has been described to me."
