James Gunn has confirmed that Gamora was nearly killed off in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2.
The first movie in the franchise was released in 2014 and starred Chris Pratt as Quill, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket, with the latter two actors performing voice roles.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 was released in 2017, while the final entry in the trilogy, Vol.3, hit cinemas in 2023.
Michael Rooker's Yondu lost his life at the conclusion of Vol.2 in the epic battle against Ego the Living Planet. But, things could have been even more fatal for the Guardians if Gunn initially had his way.
"Gamora almost died in Vol. 2," Gunn told ComicBook.com.
"I knew from the beginning Zoe only wanted to play the character for so many years, and she's been very honest saying that she's done (after this). And so I was going to have her die. I thought she was the one that was going to sacrifice herself, and (Chris Pratt's Peter) Quill was going to learn about himself as opposed to in the second movie, and I thought different of it.
"I was kind of talked out of it by Kevin and Lou , and then it just didn't work that well. It didn't feel right, it felt much more right to go where we go in that movie. That seemed what was correct for the story."
The real hero of Guardians of the Galaxy
Even though Quill is the de facto leader of the group, with Vol.2 in particular focusing on his family, Gunn actually reckons Rocket is the true protagonist of the trilogy, with emphasis on him in the third movie.
“I would say Peter's kind of a mess. I think he's suffering from major detachment issues," the director told Empire.
"For me, Rocket was always the secret protagonist of the Guardians of the Galaxy movies. You've never seen Rocket in any movie not do something altruistic. He's never done anything other than for his friends. He's not a hero in the typical sense of the word. Telling his story was really important to me."
