Dwayne Johnson has revealed that Warner Bros. were initially completely against the idea of Henry Cavill returning as Superman in Black Adam.
The latest movie in the DC Extended Universe saw Johnson play Black Adam, an anti-hero superbeing who is resurrected in modern times. In the post-credits scene, Cavill made a shock appearance as the Man of Steel, sending fans into a frenzy.
When the initial wave of euphoria settled, Cavill confirmed that it was not a one-off appearance and that he would be featuring in more DC projects moving forward.
Johnson, though, says Warner Bros. “inexplicably and inexcusably” did not want Cavill back.
“We have to bring back the most powerful, unstoppable force of all time in any universe. And you guys know who I’m talking about? Of course, that is Superman. And that’s Henry Cavill," The Rock said in a video posted on Twitter.
"This has been years in the making regarding bringing Henry Cavill back and years of strategic conversations and we were not going to take no for an answer.
“There was no way, there’s no viable logical way that you can attempt to build out the DC Universe without the most powerful force and the greatest superhero of all time sitting on the sidelines. It’s impossible to do.”
Cavill the greatest ever Superman?
On the silver screen, Superman has been played by Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh and Cavill.
Though there was a possibility that DC could potentially cast another actor to play Superman, The Rock fought for Cavill's involvement due to his belief that he is the greatest-ever version of the character.
"You have to have Superman in the mix," he explained.
"So that’s why we fought hard to bring Superman back, Henry Cavill, and there was no other Superman, by the way, to bring back Henry Cavill is our generation Superman and in my opinion, the greatest Superman. And I mean that respectfully to the other actors, especially Christopher Reeve, but the greatest Superman of all time."
Before his appearance in Black Adam, Cavill last appeared as Superman in The Justice League.
