Tom Holland's big announcement isn't exactly what fans wanted

Tom Holland has announced his next project and it's not what fans were expecting.

Yesterday, the actor teased a huge announcement and it turned out to be a return to London's West End in Jamie Lloyd's new production of Romeo & Juliet.

Lloyd said today: “Tom Holland is one of the greatest, most exciting young actors in the world. It is an honour to welcome him back to the West End.” 

The Spider-Man star previously played Billy Elliott in the West End.

Speaking of Spider-Man, many fans believed that Holland's tease was in reference to a potential announcement about Spider-Man 4.

He played Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home and Spider-Man: No Way Home as well as other movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The belief is that he will return for Spider-Man 4, though there has been no official confirmation.

Would Holland return as Spider-Man?

Holland himself has stated previously that he would only return as Peter Parker if they can do the character justice after the emotional ending to No Way Home in which the entire world forgot about his existence.

"All I can say is that we have been actively engaging in conversations about what it could potentially look like for a fourth rendition of my character," he said at a press conference for the Critics Choice Association.

"Whether or not we can find a way to do justice to the character is another thing. I feel very protective over Spider-Man. I feel very, very lucky that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with each movie, that got more successful with each movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy. So, I won’t make another one for the sake of making another one. It will have to be worth the while of the character."
