Kevin Costner has revealed that a sequel to The Bodyguard nearly materialised, with Princess Diana in talks for a role in the 1990s.
The Bodyguard was released in 1992 to enormous commercial success, earning $411 million at the box office on a budget of $25m.
The movie told the story of a famous pop diva, played by superstar Whitney Houston, who is forced to hire a professional bodyguard, played by Costner, to protect her from a stalker.
The soundtrack became the best-selling movie soundtrack ever at the time, with 45 million albums sold worldwide.
Critically, reviews weren't particularly positive, but that still didn't halt the popularity among fans.

In an interview with People, Costner says producers were keen on a sequel, and that British royal Sarah Ferguson was key in catalysing a relationship between himself and Diana.
“Sarah was really important. I always respect Sarah because she’s the one that set up the conversation between me and Diana,” Costner said.
“She was the one that set it up, and she never said, ‘Well, what about me? I’m a princess too.’ She was just so supportive of the idea.”
Diana, naturally, had concerns about appearing in her first acting role.
“I just remember her being incredibly sweet on the phone, and she asked the question, she goes, ‘Are we going to have like a kissing scene?’ She said it in a very respectful way,” Costner explained.
“She was nervous because her life was very governed. And I said, ‘Yeah, there’s going to be a little bit of that, but we can make that okay too.’ ”
The plot for the sequel would have seen Frank Farmer (Costner) hired to protect Diana from the paparazzi.
