Matt Reeves has been discussing the process of Paul Dano and Robert Pattinson during filming for The Batman.
Near the end of the movie, Batman and Riddler have a final confrontation, a face-to-face conversation. Reeves has revealed that the pair did between 70 and 80 takes, experimenting to see what worked.
"Paul loves doing a lot of takes, as do I. We took two days on the final scene between him and Robert Pattinson as Batman. We must have easily done 70 or 80 takes. Paul loves exploring. He’s obsessive that way," the director told The Guardian.
"There were all these moments as the Riddler where he’d be tickled by something and then fly into a rage, and you never knew from take to take where that switch would come. I’d be sitting there with the headphones on, trying to stifle my laughter because he’d always do something surprising. Paul would ask me: ‘Was that crazy? Was that too much?’ I’d say: ‘No it’s fantastic. Let’s do another.’”
Matt Reeves' The Batman was released in 2022 to commercial and critical acclaim, with particular praise given to the tone as well as the performances of the cast.
The Batman: Part II is set for release in 2025.
Dano given freedom for Riddler role
The character of The Riddler is significantly different from the portrayal of Jim Carrey and Batman Forever, and Dano insists it was important to ignore all other incarnations of the villain that has come before.
"I love Batman. I think Gotham is the coolest," he said in an interview with GQ.
"This Riddler. I had a lot of freedom. I'm not gonna worry about the other ones or the comics. I tried to take all the archetypal energy from the comics. I was shocked at how much I enjoyed putting out that film and engaging with the fanbase.
"The fervour around Batman. That's why, like, we keep making these. It's to reinterpret, and reinterpret for the times.
"To keep investigating a character and a world."
