Sydney Sweeney says she starred in Madame Web in order to develop other projects with Sony.
The Spider-Man Universe project was released last month but was a huge failure, being mauled by critics, with box office earnings of $96 million on a budget of $80m - and that doesn't take into account marketing costs.
The failure of the movie doesn't seem to have impacted Sweeney too much, though, as she is currently riding high off the success of Anyone But You, while new horror movie Immaculate is receiving positive reviews.
She has recently revealed that she accepted a role in Madame Web for business reasons.
“To me that film was a building block, it’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony," she told GQ.
"Without doing Madame Web I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there. Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella.”
Anyone But You became the highest-grossing R-rated romantic comedy in eight years.
Sweeney seems unconcerned by Madame Web's poor reviews, as he previously said it was just a job.
“I was just hired as an actress in it, so I was just along for the ride for whatever was going to happen," she told the LA Times.
