Superhero fatigue exists, but The Marvels will be different, says director Nia DaCosta

The Marvels director Nia DaCosta believes that superhero fatigue "absolutely exists" but that her Captain Marvel sequel won't be associated with that trend.

To date, over 30 movies have been released that are part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while there are plenty of films and TV shows that have been released from DC Comics also.

With the emergence of Disney+, fans are encouraged to watch television shows based around the MCU, too, meaning a lot of content needs to be taken in for the ultimate understanding of specific stories.

Critically, the MCU is going through a bit of a lull as projects like Thor: Love and Thunder, Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Secret Invasion did not receive as positive reviews as previous entries in that world, though Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 brought some good faith back.

DaCosta hopes to buck the trend with The Marvels as it provides something a little bit different.

“The biggest difference from the other MCU movies to date is that it’s really wacky and silly,” she told TotalFilm.

“The worlds we go to in this movie are worlds, unlike others you’ve seen in the MCU. Bright worlds that you haven’t seen before.”

Executive producer Mary Livanos added:

“The Avengers movies are these epic conclusions to chapters of storytelling, whereas this is a team-up within the narrative that we didn’t necessarily expect for Marvel. Usually, you wait for characters to show up all together in Avengers movies. We were excited to design a team-up featuring characters that women from all walks of life could relate to.”

The Marvels plot

The official premise for the movie reads:

'While investigating a wormhole linked to the Kree, Monica Rambeau's powers become entangled with those of Kamala Khan and Carol Danvers. The trio team up to determine why they are swapping places with each other every time they use their powers.'

Brie Larson reprises her role as Captain Marvel, with Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani featuring after appearances in WandaVision and Ms. Marvel respectively.

The main villain of the piece will be Dar-Benn, portrayed by Zawe Ashton. Judging from the trailer, Dar-Benn is looking for revenge on Danvers for something in the past, and it is possible she is responsible for the power-shifting mess that our three heroes find themselves in.
