Steven Spielberg did not think Jaws would be a huge success back in 1975.
Jaws is recognised as one of the greatest horror/thriller movies in history and is believed by to be the movie that kickstarted the 'summer blockbuster' trend. When adjusting for inflation, it has earned an astonishing $2 billion in box office sales.
Even though Jaws is so clearly beloved by many, Spielberg didn't have much hope for the release in 1975.
“I never would have guessed that so many people would have gone to see it," he told W magazine.
“In my mind, the shark looked dumb. When I went to the first preview, in Dallas, and people were screaming and popcorn was flying at the screen. My first feeling was, ‘Oh my God!’
“I didn’t think any of this was going to work. The truth is, you never ever know.”
Spielberg's latest movie, The Fabelmans, has received seven nominations for this year's Academy Awards.
Spielberg not retiring just yet
The 75-year-old is one of the most successful and celebrated directors in cinema history, having brought us beloved pictures such as Jaws, Indiana Jones, E.T, Schindler's List, Jurassic Park and Saving Private Ryan.
He is the recipient of two Academy Awards for Best Director for his work on Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan.
Spielberg has directed 33 movies in his career so far, and it seems like that number will continue to grow as he addressed retirement rumours while promoting his latest feature, The Fabelmans.
"This (movie) is not because I'm going to retire and this is my swan song," he said, as reported by Rolling Stone.
"Don't believe any of that."
