Steve Martin has suggested that he could retire from mainstream movies and television after the conclusion of current series, Only Murders in the Building.
The 76-year-old has been in showbusiness for 60 years and made his name as a stand-up comedian before starring in movies like The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains, Roxanne, Planes, Trains and Automobiles and The Father of The Bride.
Since 2021, he stars in Only Murders in the Building, with long-time collaborator Martin Short and Selena Gomez also on the cast.
The show is Hulu's most successful original comedy series and has been nominated for numerous Emmy Awards. A third season has just been announced, but it could end up being Martin's final role.
Prior to the series, he and Short were touring their live stand-up as a pair.
“We were very happy just doing the live show,” Martin told The Hollywood Reporter.
“There may be a natural end to that — somebody gets sick, somebody just wears out — but I wouldn’t do it without Marty. When this television show is done, I’m not going to seek others. I’m not going to seek other movies. I don’t want to do cameos. This is, weirdly, it.”
Only Murders in the Building concerns three amateur sleuths, played by Martin, Short and Gomez who investigate a series of murders in their Manhattan apartment building.
