Stephen Fry allegedly took great pleasure in playing against type as a nasty homophobe in the upcoming movie Red, White and Royal Blue.

The movie is based on the novel of the same name and tells the story of the son of the United States president who falls in love with a British Prince. It stars Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez in the main roles.

Fry plays a fictional version of royalty, King James III. Within the movie, he disapproves of the homosexual relationship between the aforementioned pair. This is, of course, in contrast to Fry's status as a proud gay man and promoter of equal rights for LGBTQ people.

He took "took a lot of delicious pleasure playing that role," according to director Matthew Lopez, who explained to Metro:

"If you are casting a fictional heterosexual homophobic bully of a monarch, you first go to Stephen Fry! Because it’s cheeky – and he knew he was cheeky – and he came in and he did such beautiful work.

"We all knew, and Stephen knew it most especially, that there was something potentially subversive about that, and he played it to the hilt. We had so much fun together."

Even though there are names of Royals mentioned within the movie, they are all fictional characters, and Lopez believes his status as a non-Brit will help him to avoid any suggestions the characters are based on real Royals.

"I have the brash ignorance of an American on my side that I will use to my advantage!" he continued.

"I think it’s very clear to anyone who sees the movie that this is not the Mountbatten-Windsors – even to the degree that I decided to change the family name in the film to Hanover-Stuart ; I just wanted to emphasise that.

"I also think that if people are watching this movie, and they’re thinking about the Windsors, we’ve sort of ruined the magic for them. This is about fantasy, it’s about escapism, and we needed to maintain that throughout the film."

Red White and Royal Blue will be released on Amazon Prime this August.
