Rebel Moon will receive a short release in cinemas before streaming on Netflix from 22 December.
Zack Snyder, a known Star Wars fan, has long been linked with developing a movie within that universe, but he has instead put together his own sci-fi space opera.
The official premise reads:
'In a universe controlled by the corrupt government of the Mother World, the moon of Veldt is threatened by the forces of the Imperium, the army of the Mother World controlled by Regent Balisarius. Kora, a former member of the Imperium who seeks redemption for her past in the leadership of the oppressive government, tasks herself to recruit warriors from across the galaxy to make a stand against the Mother World's forces before they return to the planet.'
It stars Sofia Boutella, Charlie Hunnam, Michiel Huisman, Djimon Hounsou, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Cleopatra Coleman, Jena Malone, Fra Fee, Ed Skrein, and Anthony Hopkins.
The first movie will be titled Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire, while the second movie, titled Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver will be released in April.
In true Snyder style, there will be a director's cut of both movies available.
"The difference is (this time) that we've planned for it… it's not an afterthought," producer Deborah Snyder told TotalFilm.
"We're still tweaking, but they'll probably be 45 minutes to an hour longer, each one. You get more character. You get a lot more of everything. It's not just a few deleted scenes."
Snyder has previously stated that the influences on Rebel Moon are the works of Akira Kurosawa, Heavy Metal magazines and, of course, Star Wars.
Initially, the movie was pitched as one that would feature within the Star Wars universe, but Disney baulked at the sly more mature vision from Snyder.
