There are three major new movie releases in U.S. theaters this week, and we have all the details for you.

2023 has been a huge year for cinema, with the summer period flourishing thanks to the releases of Barbie and Oppenheimer. The movies were released around the same time and many theater-goers actually did the double-feature, which was affectionately named 'Barbenheimer'.

Barbie became the most successful movie ever directed by a solo female director, earning $1.44 billion at the box office, while Oppenheimer has made $943m. No pressure for the movies that follow, then.

The year has also been impacted by the writer and actor strike in Hollywood, as several productions have faced delays into 2024. Now those strikes are over, productions can recommence.

Martin Scorcese's Killers of the Flower Moon was another huge release as that is expected to be an awards darling. The Marvels came out recently, too, and underwhelmed at the box office.

New Movie Releases this week

Wonka - 15 December, 2023

The official premise of the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory prequel reads:

'The story of how Willy Wonka went from a young adult selling chocolate in a small candy store to an eccentric genius known all the world over.'

Timothee Chalamet stars as Wonka, who was previously played to critical acclaim by Gene Wilder.

The movie has already received plenty of positive reviews, most of which have reserved praise for Chalamet's performance.

Wonka cast: Timothee Chalamet, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Tom Davis, Olivia Colman, and Hugh Grant.

American Fiction - 15 December, 2023

American Fiction is a comedy drama written and directed by Cord Jefferson based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett.  It was named one of the top 10 films of 2023 by the American Film Institute

Official premise:

'Monk is a frustrated novelist who's fed up with the establishment that profits from Black entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, he uses a pen name to write an outlandish Black book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.'

American Fiction cast: Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, and Sterling K. Brown.

The Zone of Interest - 15 December, 2023

The Zone of Interest is a historical drama written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, loosely based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Martin Amis. It premiered in Cannes in May and won the Grand Prix and the FIPRESCI Prize.

Official premise:

'The commandant of the Auschwitz concentration camp, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden next to the camp.'

The Zone of Interest cast: Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller
