The James Bond franchise has a new writer, and it's certainly an intriguing choice.
Deadline reports that Peaky Blinders creator and writer Steven Knight has been approached to write the next Bond movie, which will be the first under the Amazon banner after the corporation bought MGM, eventually pairing with Eon Productions, the company owned by franchise stalwarts Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.
In early 2025, Broccoli and Wilson surrendered creative control over the Bond franchise to Amazon for a cool $1 billion.
It has been four years since the release of the last 007 adventure, No Time to Die, and we aren't really any closer to finding a replacement for Daniel Craig.
But, crucially, we do have an acclaimed director in the form of Denis Villeneuve, famous for critical darlings like Arrival, the Dune franchise, Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners and Sicario.
Knight is most famed for creating Peaky Blinders starring Cillian Murphy, but has penned several movie screenplays like Eastern Promises, Locke, Maria, Allied and Pawn Sacrifice.
He is currently working on the upcoming Peaky Blinders movie, titled The Immortal Man. Interestingly, he previously mentioned the Bond franchise when discussing that project.
“The biggest difference between a film and TV series is the budget,” he told the Mirror. “When you do stuff for TV, you often have to ask people to imagine it. But with a film, you can really do it. You can blow stuff up. Will Tommy be giving James Bond a run for his money? Maybe.
"There are parallels. We always thought of Peaky as very cinematic, so we are finally finding a screen big enough for what we want to do.”
Knight replaces Neal Purvis and Robert Wade who wrote all five of Daniel Craig's Bond flicks.
Who will play James Bond?
Since Craig announced his retirement from the role, over a dozen actors have been mentioned as potential successors, including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Idris Elba, Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill, James Norton, Luke Evans, Richard Madden, Chris Hemsworth, Rege-Jean Page and Aaron Pierre.
Most recently, Tom Holland, Jacob Elordi, Harris Dickinson and Callum Turner have been namedropped in the press.
