Scream VII has found its director in the form of Christopher Landon.
The 2022 reboot/sequel of Scream was a commercial and critical success, as was Scream VI, released in 2023.
On a budget of $24 million, Scream earned $140 million at the worldwide box office, a healthy return for an R-rated 18+ film. A major contributing factor to the success of the latest movie in the Scream franchise has been attributed to the young cast who breathed new life, or death, into Woodsboro.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the last two Scream movies, but they are stepping aside for Scream VII in order to focus on a new, original horror picture for Universal.
They will, however, remain involved in the movie in an executive producer capacity.
Landon comes aboard are finding success with such hits as Happy Death Death, Freaky and Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.
There are no plot or casting details about Scream VII as of yet.
The Core Four of Scream VI
Bettinelli-Opin and Gillett believe that Sidney's absence in Scream VI actually helped the movie focus more on the group now subbed as the 'Core Four' - Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy-Brown and Mason Gooding who were introduced in 2022's Scream.
“Obviously we were super bummed when Neve wasn't going to do it, and the thing that we immediately went to was like, ‘Okay, if we're not doing this with Neve again, we have to make sure that you fall in love with these characters the way that we all fell in love with Sidney and Gale and Dewey," they said.
"So we took that responsibility really, really seriously and made sure that if we do our job right, you leave this movie going, ‘Oh, I love the Core Four and I want their journey to continue the same way that we all want Sidney and Gale and Dewey to continue.’”
Scream VI was notable for the absence of Neve Campbell, the hero of the franchise since the first movie. She opted not to return, believing she was not being significantly compensated by the studio.
