Idris Elba has been discussing some of the similarities and differences between Luther and Bond movies.
BBC series, Luther, ran for nearly a decade between 2010 and 2019, with Elba receiving critical acclaim for his performance as DCI John Luther. He will return as the character in a new Netflix movie titled Luther: The Fallen Sun.
The actor has long been linked with the role of James Bond, but he has recently bowed out of the race to be cast as 007, while he believes that Luther can be its own franchise.
"The Bond series is an incredible staple to the UK and the world right, but Luther could take up some of that real estate," he said in an interview with Magic Radio.
"It is not about espionage, but it is about how to catch them. I think Luther tends to be a little bit more relatable, you know grounded. You know guys that creep from under your bed.
"Hopefully it is the beginning of the new chapter. Sounds corny, but you know we have gone from television, we have gone as far as we can and now, we have got the world as our stage. Big epic landscapes and you know infinite stories."
What has Elba said about Luther and Bond?
Elba has been in the conversation for the next Bond for years, with speculation intensifying following Daniel Craig's retirement from the role, but it appears the 50-year-old has a series of Luther movies in mind.
Speaking on the Jemele Hill is Unbothered podcast, Elba said: “It's incredible, it's like graduating. The television show ran a natural course, we did five seasons and each one of them shape-shifted but kept an audience captivated for 10 years.
"The graduation point is where we get to take that Luther character and elevate him to the big screen with a wider spectrum of scale, stories we can tell, maybe even take it international in terms of who Luther is. It's a huge achievement for all of us who have written it.
"Also what I'm happy about is that I saw the film, we shot the film, and if you've never seen an episode of Luther you can still be invited into the first chapter of the film series, I'm hoping that this movie literally becomes my Bond, everyone talks about Bond but, for me, it's Luther.”
Elba has previously said that he is sick of being asked about his potential casting for the next James Bond.
