The response to Lord of War back in 2005 was lukewarm as it received a mixed-to-positive reception from critics and earned $73 million at the box office.
The performance of Nicolas Cage as arms dealer Yuri Orlov received particular acclaim.
The official premise read:
'Yuri, an arms dealer, forms a business deal with an African warlord. Soon, he is pursued by an Interpol agent and must keep himself and his family away from danger.'
A potential sequel has been on the cards for a while, and it was confirmed in May of 2023.
The Hollywood Reporter detailed that Bill Skarsgård has been cast as Yuri's son and a fellow arms dealer. It will be titled Lords of War.
The reported premise is:
'Yuri Orlov, the world's most famous arms dealer, discovers that he has a son, Anton who is trying to outdo his father by raising an army of mercenaries to fight in America's Middle Eastern conflicts, triggering a father-son rivalry.'
The first movie was written and directed by Andrew Niccol and he is returning returning for number two.
“There is so much more to explore with these characters. Plato said it best — ‘Only the dead have seen the end of war.’ I’m looking forward to spending more time in the company of the charming devil that is Yuri Orlov and now his illegitimate son — who turns out to not be legitimate in any way,” Niccol said in a statement.
