28 Years Later has undoubtedly been one of the biggest movies of 2025 and certainly one of the most highly anticipated horror sequels of all time.
Following a two-decade absence from the movie series they created, director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland returned to the world of the rage virus and earned critical acclaim for their work as well as $150 million at the box office.
The original 28 Days Later, released in 2002 and starring Cillian Murphy, Brendan Gleeson, Naomie Harris and Christopher Eccleston, is credited with reinvigorating the zombie genre and remains one of the most influential horrors of the 21st century.
A sequel, 28 Weeks Later, came in 2007 with a brand new cast, director and writer, though Boyle remained as an executive producer.
The official synopsis of 28 Years Later reads:
'It's been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped from a biological weapons laboratory. Still living in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist amid the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of them decides to venture into the dark heart of the mainland, he soon discovers a mutation that has spread to not only the infected, but other survivors as well.'
It stars Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes and Alfie Williams in his film debut.
The reaction from the MovieMeter community has been positive as it currently holds a score of 3.41 out of five on our scale.

"Quite surprised by this film. 28 Days/Weeks Later were good movies, but this one is clearly a few levels higher. Visually I also thought it was really cool." - user SexyThing
"Danny Boyle comes up with a refreshing approach considering the previous parts. The location is moved to the beautiful natural forests and the infected have also undergone an evolution. Cool choices and of course the film has quite a few strong bloody scenes. Trump card is the excellent soundtrack! Too bad about the unsatisfactory ending, especially the elaboration of which does not exactly fit in this film. Maybe this will become clearer in the sequel." - user Noodless
"Visually I was never a big fan of the first one. 28 weeks later was already a bit toned down and that's why I could digest it better. After a review this week it was now 28 years later's turn. And for the first half Boyle is 100% convincing. The settlement feels logical with the society that has been built up and the atmosphere once on the mainland feels incredibly gloomy and oppressive. The score from the trailers comes back well and it is actually a complete homerun." - user Rep_robert
