One of the most highly-anticipated movies of 2023 is the next entry in The Exorcist franchise - The Exorcist: Believer.
In August of 2020, it was announced that Morgan Creek Entertainment would produce a new Exorcist movie that would serve as a direct sequel to the 1973 original, leaving out some of the storylines from the subsequent sequels.
The Exorcist tells the story of a young girl, Regan, who is possessed by a demon and the impact the events have on her family as well as two priests who are recruited to help her.
It is widely regarded by many as a masterpiece and the greatest horror film of all time.
Linda Blair played Regan and she has spoken since about how her performance has impacted her life both positively and negatively. David Gordon Green is directing the new movie, and recently confirmed Blair's involvement, but only in an advisor capacity.
"She came to set because she was an advisor on the movie," Green revealed to TotalFilm.
"I was really lucky to have her read the script, but she was not interested in a significant role and stepping back into that. We brought her in as an advisor because we're dealing with young people, and we want to take them to dangerous places safely."
The Exorcist: Believer has scenes that could 'TRUMP' the original
It takes a certain amount of bravery to make a new entry in the series following some poorly received follow-ups, but Green helmed the project that stars Leslie Odom Jr. and Ellen Burstyn, who reprises her role as Regan's mother from the original.
Might some parts actually surpass the original?
"There are some impactful and astounding scenes that could potentially trump what people remember from 50 years ago," stunt coordinator Ashley Rae Trisler told TotalFilm.
Blair played Regan in the original movie and was put through extreme physicality for the role. In one scene, she permanently damaged her back after a malfunctioning bed threw her into the air. Everything was a bit safer for the performers this time round...
"Everybody kept all their limbs, and we were safe throughout the shooting," Trisler continued. "Obviously there’s bumps and bruises and that kind of thing. But nothing of major concern.
"They had talks about wanting a female, primarily because of them having two lead cast members that were underage females, and knowing the tenderness and touch of a female coordinator could be really, really helpful in such emotional filming."
