Daniel Craig says his experience of working on the James Bond franchise helped him deal with the expectations of returning for the sequel to Knives Out.
The first Knives Out movie, directed by Rian Johnson, was released in 2019 and told the story of Blanc, a private detective investigating the death of a wealthy businessman.
It featured an impressive ensemble cast, as in addition to Craig we saw Ana de Armas, Christopher Plummer, Jamie Lee Curtis, Chris Evans, Michael Shannon, Toni Colette, Don Johnson, Lakeith Stanfield, Katherine Langford and Jaeden Martell.
Knives Out received critical acclaim for its acting, directing and screenplay, with the screenplay being nominated for an Academy Award.
When a sequel, Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery, was announced, expectations naturally rose due to the success of the first movie.
Craig, of course, has plenty of experience dealing with expectations, having played James Bond for 15 years.
“How the fuck do we take something that caught people’s imagination and made them talk about murder mysteries, and do it again without it becoming a pastiche of itself?" he said, in a conversation with Empire.
“I’ve spent the past 15 years of my life trying to do that in a franchise, so I’m not afraid of it. If you’ve got the right people in the room and the right talent, then you can do it. Rian’s a genius writer and doesn’t want to repeat .
"Neither do we want to let people down; we want audiences to enjoy the world that we created in the first one and believe in this one.”
What is the plot of Knives Out 2?
Benoit Blanc is the only returning character from the original Knives Out, and Glass Onion will feature a completely new story with a new ensemble.
In addition to Craig, it stars Edward Norton, Dave Bautista, Janelle Monae, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Jessica Henwick.
The official premise for Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is:
"Tech billionaire Miles Bron invites his friends for a getaway on his private Greek island. When someone turns up dead, Detective Benoit Blanc is put on the case."
