Cillian Murphy says he would love to team up with director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland again to finish the 28 Days Later trilogy.
28 Days Later was released in 2002 and was a commercial and critical success, earning $85 million worldwide from a budget of just $8m. A sequel, 28 Weeks Later, arrived five years later, but it was Juan Carlos Fresnadillo who sat in the director's chair for that one.
Though Boyle would remain as a producer on the sequel, he was unable to direct due to his commitments on Sunshine.
While promoting his new movie Oppenheimer this week, Murphy was asked about a potential return to the franchise, and he reckons the timing could be right.
"I was talking to Danny Boyle recently, and I said, 'Danny, we shot the movie at the end of 2000.'" he told Collider.
"So I think we’re definitely approaching the 28 Years Later. But like I’ve always said, I’m up for it. I’d love to do it. If Alex thinks there’s a script in it and Danny wants to do it, I’d love to do it."
Does Danny Boyle want to make a third movie?
There has long been speculation about what a '28 Months Later' movie would look like, and Boyle is definitely warming to the idea of a return after reflecting on the brilliance of the script for the first movie.
"I'd be very tempted (to direct it). It feels like a very good time actually," he said in a conversation with NME.
"It's funny. I hadn't thought about it until you just said it, and I remembered 'Bang, this script!' which is again set in England, very much about England. Anyway, we'll see... who knows?
"I instantly knew the film was something very special. I remember reading the first ten pages thinking, 'This is brilliant'.
"It was like a quarter of a page. He wanders around London on his own and you just thought, 'Oh my God!'"
