Kevin Bacon has joined the cast of the upcoming fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise.
The original Beverly Hills Cop was released in 1984 and it solidified Eddie Murphy's status as a bankable leading man in Hollywood. It spawned two sequels which were released in 1987 and 1994.
A fourth movie has been planned for decades, but went into development hell.
Now, Netflix is producing a new movie, titles Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.
In April of 2022, it was confirmed that Mark Molloy will direct while Will Beall is writing the script.
In September, it was confirmed that Paul Reiser, Judge Reinhold, Bronson Pinchot and John Ashton will be reprising their respective roles from the trilogy, while Joseph Gordon-Levitt has also joined the cast.
The franchise was initially turned into a television series starring Brandon T. Jackson, and although it wasn't picked up, it is believed test audiences reacted well which ignited interest in another film.
Murphy has previously stated that he would not return as Foley unless it was a strong script. Speaking in 2021, he said:
"They've been trying to make another Beverly Hills Cop for 15 years now.
"Right now, Netflix has it, and they're trying to develop a script. That's what we're supposed to be doing next. But, I'm not doing nothing until the script is right."
Murphy is always Axel Foley
Murphy has previously revealed his disdain for Beverly Hills Cop 3, which was a failure both critically and commercially.
He says he is most recognised for playing Axel, though.
"The third Beverly Hills Cop was garbage," Murphy insisted.
"Those movies, when I travel overseas, people say, 'Hey, Beverly Hills Cop! Axel Foley!' They call me that s***. All the movies I’ve done, and they call me that. If we do that movie, it has to be right."
