There's been a rather promising response to the new Alien movie from none other than Ridley Scott.
The first Alien was released in 1979. It was a claustrophobic horror set in space, with hero Ellen Ripley and her crewmates terrorised by a being that would eventually be known as a Xenomorph.
The original trilogy continued with Aliens, directed by James Cameron, who added more of an action element to the story, while David Fincher's Alien 3 was set on a remote prison planet.
Sigourney Weaver, who played Ripley, would return for Alien: Resurrection in 1997.
Over a decade later, Scott would return to direct the prequel movie set in the Alien universe, Prometheus and that was followed by Alien: Covenant. Neill Blomkamp was heavily involved in the development of a new movie, but his pitch was ditched in favour of a vision from Fede Alvarez.
Scott is naturally very protective of the franchise, but the good news is, he's seen Alien: Romulus - and he loves it!
“Even if he didn’t ask for it, I was gonna go there and sit at a table and look at him and get it,” Alvarez said at the DGA Latino Summit in Los Angeles.
“Even if he was gonna say, ‘You destroyed my legacy,’ I wanted to be in front of him and see him in the eye. I didn’t want to get an email where it says, ‘Ridley says…’”
Scott apparently walked into the room and said: “‘Fede, what can I say? It’s fucking great.’”
Alvarez said the response from Sir Ridley was one of the best moments of his entire life.
“My family knows it was one of the best moments of my life to have a master like him, whom I admire so much, to even watch a movie I made, particularly something like this, and talk to me for an hour about what he liked about it," he added.
"One of the best compliments he said was, ‘The dialogue is great. Are you the writer?’ Yes!”
What is Alien Romulus about?
Alien: Romulus has a fairly simple premise so far:
“A group of young people on a distant world, who find themselves in a confrontation with the most terrifying life form in the universe.”
It stars Cailee Spaeny, Isabela Merced, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu.
