The impact of the 2023 actor and writer strikes in Hollywood is still being felt in 2024 as many big productions faced significant delays.
However, there are still some major, highly-anticipated movies that will be released this year, including Wicked.
The movie is an adaptation of the hit musical of the same name, which in turn is inspired by iconic film, The Wizard of Oz.
The musical is one of the most successful in history and is the fourth-longest-running Broadway show of all time, with over 7,500 productions so far.
What is the plot of Wicked?
Official premise:
'An unlikely friendship emerges between Elphaba and Glinda, two clashing witches in the magical land of Oz. Elphaba is wrongfully cast as a wicked witch as she seeks to expose the fraudulent, corrupt Wizard who rules the land.'
This is Part One of a two-part adaptation of the musical, with Wicked: Part Two set for release in 2025.
"As we prepared the production over the last year, it became impossible to wrestle the story of Wicked into a single film without doing some real damage to it," director Jon M. Chu previously explained.
"As we tried to cut songs or trim characters, those decisions began to feel like fatal compromises to the source material that has entertained us all for so many years. We decided to give ourselves a bigger canvas and make not just one Wicked movie but two! With more space, we can tell the story of Wicked as it was meant to be told while bringing even more depth and surprise to the journeys for these beloved characters."
