Huh zo weinig regisseurs die ik ken in de hoofdcompetitie. Ik dacht juist dat het erg drukbezet zou zijn, met Dolan, Ceylan, Reygadas, Lanthimos en Kawase. Lijkt mij juist belachelijk zwak bezet te zijn qua namen.

Spike Lee!

Leuke namen. Ik zet mijn geld op Lee Chang-dong.

Verder juist een heel erg sterk jaar met Spike Lee , Jafar Panahi , Christophe Honoré , Matteo Garrone ( 2 keer winnaar van ' Grand Prize of the Jury ' ) , Zhangke Jia en JLG ! Maar ook veel andere gevestigde namen .

Ben blij dat mijn voorspellingen niet helemaal zijn uitgekomen. Ongeveer de helft van de hoofdcompetitie zijn nieuwe namen. Eindelijk nieuw bloed. Van de oudgediende kijk ik erg uit naar Brizé, Garrone, Zhang-ke, Koreeda, Chang-Dong én Rohrwacher.

Labaki lijkt me erin gezet vanwege het verplichte aantal regisseuses. Nog nooit betrapt op enig talent. Godard hopelijk zijn laatste film. Honoré als verplichte Fransoos. Hamaguchi wel een grote verrassing. Ben benieuwd hoeveel gegadigden naar Cannes ooit van hem gehoord hebben. Laat staan iets van hem gezien hebben.

Abbasi in de UCR. Zijn debuut was nogal onevenwichtig maar misschien is dit wel iets. Hetzelfde gelft voor Yerzhanov. Bi Gan in de UCR. Paar jaar geleden goed voorspelt. Groot Chinees talent.

Kijk ook uit naar 10 Years in Thailand!

Vind het wel een leuk en evenwichtig lijstje. Paar usual Suspects om naar uit te kijken. Paar verrassingen. De comeback van Lee Chang Dong. Natuurlijk gewoon de nieuwe Godard. Paar regisseurs waarvan ik, oh ja, eindelijk eens wat moet zien. En één regisseur waarvan ik nog nooit gehoord had, A.B. Shawky. Maar dit blijkt dan ook zijn langspeelfilmdebuut. En wat minder voorspelbaar dan Verhoevens voorspellingen.

Erg veel zin in Bi Gan's nieuwe film. Zijn debuut was een fraaie ruwe diamant. En genoeg te ontdekken in de bijprogramma's.

En Dolan wint dit jaar de Gouden Leeuw

Ik mis vooral The House That Jack Built (2018) van Lars von Trier , Domino (2018) van Brian De Palma en The Beach Bum (2018) van Harmony Korine .

Komen nog wel een of meer films bij. We hebben er nu 18. Vorig jaar en in 2015 19, in 2016 zelfs 21.

Ja , volgens Thierry Frémaux is The House That Jack Built (2018) van Lars von Trier nog steeds een twijfelgevalletje .

En Harmony Korine wint dit jaar gewoon zijn eerste Gouden Leeuw .

Wat ik vooral echt heel erg jammer vind , is het ontbreken van de laatste film van Orson Welles , The Other Side of the Wind (2018) . Orson Welles' daughter asks Netflix to "please reconsider" Cannes withdrawl - theplaylist.net

Ik vind GODard veel beter dan Orson Welles , maar ik zou het echt fantastisch vinden om films van beide filmtitanen tegen elkaar te zien , al maakt de film van GODard vanzelfsprekend door diens experimentele aard geen schijn van kans om het beeldje te winnen .

Gewoon allemaal nog niet klaar ofzo.

Ach , als je alles rationeel beredeneert staat JLG boven alles en iedereen , Spike Lee is de enige echte cinema heavyweight en de enige echte heavyweight die ik mis is Brian de Palma . De rest is eigenlijk flyweight ...

Garrone

Benieuwd of Spike Lee weer iets echt goeds maakt. Vind het cool dat hij eigenwijs blijft maar zijn recente films zijn onevenwichtig. Godard hoort niet op cannes thuis stedelijk museum ofzo. Hij boeit al zeker 50tig jaar niet meer. Bij hem moet ik altijd denken aan de uitspraak over Walt Whitman. Het was niet erg goed, maar hij was de eerste die het deed.

Godard is misschien te experimenteel om nog aan een officieel filmfestival mee te doen, en als we dan toch bezig zijn onder het mom van nieuwe talenten kansen te geven, dan zou ik eerder hem afserveren dan Ceylan, Nemes en Dolan. Maar dat betekent niet dat je geen respect moet hebben voor de man of dat de man geen plaats meer heeft in de filmwereld.

Nu, ik weet ook niet of er een max limiet staat of het aantal officiële inzendingen. Anders maakt het ook niet echt uit. Een potentiële kanshebber is het toch al zeker niet.

Xavier Dolan: Cannes Welcomed ‘The Death and Life of John F. Donovan’

Geruchten gaan dat hij voor de tweede keer is afgewezen. [Check dat plaatje! ] Hopelijk brengt Dolan dat onding van hem niet naar Venetië. Laat hem maar ergens achter in de Verenigde Staten ...

Denk Toronto...vindt je alles van hem kut Verhoeven?

Verhoeven is een kruistocht begonnen tegen niet-heteroseksuele filmregisseurs.

Ik heb wel 3x gecheckt of Verhoeven niet Nolan i.p.v. Dolan bedoelt maar bij Dunkirk heeft hij toch echt een 4,5 staan dus zal het wel zo zijn.
