LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Estelle Reiner, who uttered the famous line, "I'll have what she's having," after watching Meg Ryan fake an orgasm in the movie "When Harry Met Sally," has died. She was 94.

Carl and Estelle Reiner married in 1943. Estelle Reiner had roles in some of her husband and son's movies.

Reiner, the wife of actor-director Carl Reiner and mother of actor-director Rob Reiner, died Saturday of old age at her home in Beverly Hills, her nephew George Shapiro said.

Besides a handful of movie roles, Reiner was a painter and late in life became a jazz singer. During the Vietnam War, she was one of the organizers of the group Another Mother For Peace.

In "When Harry Met Sally," Ryan and Billy Crystal are sitting in a restaurant, arguing over whether women can realistically fake orgasms when Ryan demonstrates that they can.

After her vocal display, Reiner, seated at another table, quickly says, "I'll have what she's having."

Reiner had small roles in several other movies, including "The Man With Two Brains," which her husband directed, and "Fatso," directed by her friend, the late Anne Bancroft.

Acclaimed author Studs Terkel dies at 96

Pulitzer Prize-winning author, radio host and activist Studs Terkel died in his Chicago, Illinois, home Friday at the age of 96.

Terkel had grown frail since the publication last year of his memoir, "Touch and Go," said Gordon Mayer, vice president of the Community Media Workshop, which Terkel had supported.

"I'm still in touch, but I'm ready to go," he said last year at his last public appearance with the workshop, a nonprofit that recognizes Chicago reporters who take risks in covering the city.

"My dad led a long, full, eventful -- sometimes tempestuous -- satisfying life," his son Dan said in a statement.

"The last time I saw him, he was up, about, and mad as hell about the Cubs," workshop President Thom Clark said in the statement.

Terkel, known for his portrayal of ordinary people young and old, rich and poor, won a Pulitzer Prize in 1985 for his remembrances of World War II, "The Good War."

Terkel was born in New York but moved to Chicago, where his parents ran a small hotel. Terkel would sit in the hotel lobby watching droves of people arguing, fighting, ranting and telling stories.

"That hotel was far more of an education to me than the University of Chicago was," Studs told CNN in 2000.

It seems that beginning would pave the way for Terkel's love of passing on people's oral histories. He could often be found behind a tape recorder talking to the people who would eventually become the basis for his books. Terkel became famous, if not synonymous with oral histories, for his ability to cast a light on the working class.

"Oral history preceded the written word," Terkel told CNN in 2000. "Oral history is having people tell their own stories and bringing it forth.

"That's what history's about: the oral history of the unknowns that make the wheel go 'round. And that's what I'm interested in."

In an interview with Lou Waters on CNN in 1995, Terkel spoke about his book "Coming of Age," which explored the lives of people who have been "scrappers" all of their lives. Inside the book are the stories of people between the ages of 70 and 95, a group he called "the truth tellers."

"Who are the best historians? Who are the storytellers?" Terkel asked. "Who lived through the Great Depression of the '30s, World War II that changed the whole psyche and map of the world, a Cold War, Joe McCarthy, Vietnam, the '60s, that's so often put down today and I think was an exhilarating and hopeful period, and, of course, the computer and technology. Who are the best ones to tell the story? Those who've borne witness to it. And they're our storytellers."

After Terkel's wife died in 1999, he began working on a book about death, eventually called "Will the Circle Be Unbroken? Reflections on Death, Rebirth, and Hunger for a Faith."

"It's about life," Terkel said in 2000 when asked about the project. "How can one talk about life without saying sometime it's going to end? It makes the value of life all the more precious."

Michael Crichton overleden.

LOS ANGELES (ANP) - De Amerikaanse schrijver Michael Crichton is dinsdag in Los Angeles op 66-jarige leeftijd overleden. Dat heeft zijn management in een verklaring laten weten, meldde CNN woensdag.

"Hij overleed plotseling, na een moedig gevecht tegen kanker", aldus de verklaring.

Crichton is vooral bekend door zijn boek Jurassic Park, dat in 1993 werd verfilmd door Steven Spielberg. Ook schreef en produceerde hij de bekende Amerikaanse televisieserie ER.

Novelist and 'ER' creator passed away after a long battle with cancer.

He was 66.

Best-known for his best-selling books like "Jurassic Park," and its sequel "The Lost World," which were made into a successful movie franchise, Crichton has sold more than 150 million books worldwide. Many of his books, including "The Andromeda Strain," "Congo," "Twister," "Terminal Man," and "Disclosure," were also turned into films.

A statement on the author's Web site reads, "While the world knew him as a great story teller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us - and entertained us all while doing so - his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes. He did this with a wry sense of humor that those who were privileged to know him personally will never forget."

RIP Michael Crichton. Toen ik een jaar of 14 was, was ik helemaal weg van Jurassic Park, The Lost World (minstens 3 keer gelezen) en Sphere.

Jammer, vooral het feit dat z'n boeken beter waren dan de films. En zo oud is 66 eigenlijk ook niet...

Kan je gelijk vertalen wat R.I.P. betekent. Denk niet dat alle doden/levenden het kunnen volgen.

r.i.p. is de engelse afkorting van rest in peace. En de Nederlandse vertaling betekent 'rust in vrede'.

Om onbegrijpelijke redenen gebruiken meeste mensen van verschillende nationaliteiten de afkorting r.i.p en dus niet de eigen taal. Als voorbeeld kunnen we deze site nemen. Bijna iedereen typt zijn tekst in Nederlands, maar op het laatste moment komt het woord R.I.P. weer voorbij. Terwijl het gewoon in Nederlands kan.

Ergste is natuurlijk als er respectloos een smiley wordt gebruikt naast het woord 'r.i.p'.

Nou dit weer .

De afkorting R.I.P. is gewoon in de Van Dale te vinden en is dus met de jaren een Nederlandstalige uitdrukking geworden. Alternatieven als R.I.V. bestaan niet. En als je dan toch de puntjes op de i wil zetten: R.I.P. is niet rest in peace, maar wel requiescat in pace. Dat Engelse is er later zelf van gemaakT.

En wat te denken van de Jazz Funerals in Louisiana. Die mensen feesten als nooit tevoren. Wou dat dat ook in Nederland kon... Helaas.

Tuurlijk kan dat niet, dan moet je ook de achtergrond en cultuur er omheen beseffen. Anders sta je gewoon simpelweg op straat te feesten.

R.I.P. 66 is veel te jong natuurlijk.

Wat ik vooral ken van hem is het destijds baanbrekende Jurassic Park en The Great Train Robbery (zelf geregisseert). De man heeft verder een prachtige carrière achter de rug.

Laatste adem met brokjes.

Jurassic Park is een pracht boek, ongelofelijk dat hij zo jong is gestorven...
