Foreign nationals in Italy can be held in a CIE, a Centro di Identificazione ed Espulsione (Centre for Identification and Expulsion) for eighteen months before being admitted or deported. Italian photographer/documentary maker Alessio Genovese was the first to get permission to look behind the walls. He interviews the guards as well as the men and women who have to spend the long months behind closed doors.
