Dong-chang-saeng plot

"He'll stop nothing to save her."

To save his sister's life, Myung-hoon decides to volunteer as a spy and infiltrate South Korea as a defecting student. While in high school in the South, he meets another girl who, like his sister, is also called Hye-in, and he rescues her when she is attacked. However, the South Korean authorities soon discover the true reason for Myung-hoon's stay and begin to track him down. At the same time, the North Korean government sends an assassin to take out Myung-hoon before his cover is revealed. His chances of surviving this bloody cat-and-mouse game are diminishing by the day…

Nice action film with the necessary dramatic elements, about a young spy from North Korea who infiltrates the South to guarantee his freedom (and that of his imprisoned sister). The build-up is exciting and there are quite a few spectacular action scenes, but at a certain point the plot starts to run smoothly and the film drags on to an unremarkable climax. Fortunately, the protagonist has enough charisma to keep things on track.

Nice binoculars.

Mainly because of the appearance of the main character. Cool dude. The action scenes are good, albeit a bit sparse. In the end, too much drama is added, something that I don't really want in an action film. A similar story has often been reviewed.

3*

I also saw a film by Ki-duk Kim about Northerners entering South Korea (Geumul (Film, 2016)), but those cannot be compared with this for a second. No serenity here that is swept aside by fierce fighting and one big espionage tangle in which the spy is chased by the South Korean police and ultimately his own government.

All in all I found it quite entertaining. Of course the good guy survives several attacks, but I could empathize with his character. The relationship with Hye-in was also worked out reasonably well so that the subplots were also interesting to follow.

I lost it half way through. It dragged a bit and became a bit unclear. Suddenly there were many infiltrators, each with their own role. The emphasis is indeed on the action and less on the further development of the story, but the action was more than OK.
