Tommy Taylor left his family years ago to pursue a career as a composer and earns a living as a pianist at the Chips Maguire nightclub. When the police raid for illegal activities, Chips forces Tommy through blackmail to arrange for Chips to stay at Tommy's mother's guest house under the pseudonym Graselli. But one of the other residents is Sarah Jane Ryan, an old acquaintance of Chips who is pursuing a career as a singer. While Chips tries to hide, a romance develops between the singer and the composer.

In one of the last films before Bogart's big break, he starred in this combination of crime, comedy and music. Most of the musical interludes are separate from the story and consist of performances by vaudeville acts such as White and Stanley and the singing quartet with the bizarre name The Lady Killer's Quartet. Curiosities for the enthusiasts in a film starring a colorless Jeffrey Lynn as a pianist/composer who forcibly arranges shelter for his former boss Chips Maguire [Humphrey Bogart] when the police discover that his nightclub is for illegal activities. Ann Sheridan easily dominates the film and she is the main reason to watch this above-average, but certainly not great, film.

What starts as a crime noir quickly turns into a comedy, something we hardly saw at that time and it works quite well, which is of course mainly due to the cast, but Bogart also comes in well as a comic supporting role.
