"The competition of life starts 19.10.12"
Yoginder Vashisht (Rishi Kapoor), the dean of St. Theresa College, is seriously ill. Several students from his senior year at St. Theresa College are going to visit him. Together they reminisce about their school days and the "Student of the Year" competition. Flashbacks show Rohan Nanda (Varun Dhawan), the son of a wealthy businessman struggling with a complex relationship with his father, and middle-class Abhimanyu "Abhi" Singh (Sidharth Malhotra), vying for the love of Shanaya (Alia Bhatt), and their rivalry culminates in a grueling "Student of the Year" competition.
