Dorsvloer Vol Confetti plot

The young Katelijne grows up in a strict Protestant peasant family. As the only girl among six brothers, she is hardly involved in the work on the farm and is excluded from daily conversations. As a result, she gives free rein to her imagination by indulging in Biblical stories, gossip, and even fairy tales, although she's actually not allowed to read them. During her brother's wedding, however, she overwhelms her family with literature, saying goodbye to her childhood.

I don't like conservatives and certainly not conservative believers of any religion. Although I only know this little world from a distance, it seems to me that this film paints a very nice picture of life in a peasant family where simple pleasures of life are taboo, because the pastor (or whoever) says so. Probably indicative of the atmosphere of the film is the announcement by an elder in front of a full church that two young people have pleaded guilty to the church board for sinning against the seventh commandment. Such and other "accidents" are, of course, inevitable in spite of the oppressive straitjacket in which youngsters battling their hormones have to grow up. I thought it was an interesting film, partly thanks to the acting of the mother (Suzan Boogaerdt) and her daughter (Hendrikje Nieuwerf). But above all, I consider myself lucky that I had a much freer upbringing at the time.

In the first scene I was quite misled. A very absurd scene with very funny humor and dialogues á la Warmerdam. That promised something! But the rest of the movie is nothing like that first scene. A pity perhaps, but on the other hand certainly not. Because a completely different but very beautiful film develops further. The great contrast between the strict faith and the adolescent or worldly. But very subtly and symbolically filmed. Perfectly dodged the trap to make it grand and caricatured. Really very handsome.

And then a fantastic leading role by an unknown Hendrikje Nieuwerf and also a very nice use of music. Music that can also be there. The highlight of the film is also the confetti-filled threshing floor. That perfectly sums up what the film is about. Very nice film that made a deep impression. Hats off to director Tallulah who I had never heard of either. But I hope it's a name I'll remember.

I now see that this is unfortunately his only real feature film and therefore already from seven years ago. Furthermore, he has only made short films that look promising but are probably very hard to find.

Katelijne Minderhout [Hendrikje Nieuwerf] grew up in the 1980s in a traditional Christian farming family in Zeeland. Apart from a subplot surrounding the love life of brother Christiaan [Yannick de Waal], there is hardly any plot, but thanks mainly to Nieuwerf's natural and engaging playing and Schwab's intelligent, well-dosed use of stylistic devices, this is entertaining, entertaining and often captivating.
