The Giver plot

"Search for truth. Find freedom."

The film tells the story of a seemingly perfect world in which everyone is happy. When Jonas is 12 years old, he is chosen as the "recipient of memories" for the community. He goes into training with an old man called the Giver. Jonas learns about pain, sorrow, war and all the unfortunate truths in the "real" world. He soon realizes that his community is not real. Faced with this reality, he faces difficult choices about his own life and his future.

Although I dare not say which story is older, The Giver is mainly a film that we have seen before - and better. Pleasantville (1998) and [url=https://www.moviemeter.nl/film/46326]City of Ember (2008)[ /url] immediately came to mind and maybe there are more titles.

The effects are of course more of this time, but otherwise I have not seen anything high-quality. Bridges and Streep play characters (surprising that they managed to get two A-list actors for such a thing) and protagonist Thwaites especially provoked irritation, with his happy face and big puppy eyes. Furthermore, the film follows the well-known paths, where it was especially noticeable that The Giver is even more moralistic compared to other young adult stories. Especially those edited, well-known images of today's humanity - including Mandela, Tankman etc. - gave SJW heartburn.

Still, I like this kind of future settings, so a five is just off. 2.5*

Concept good, execution way too boring. Film lapses into many emotionless dialogues and boring stories. For an SF you see that there is little budget available. No connection at all with the actors. Couldn't empathize with story. Missed opportunity...

An interesting concept, especially in the first 45 minutes of the film, but at the same time a film that could deal with many more issues with this interesting idea and delve deeper into the matter.

The film unfortunately chooses the well-known (film) path but fortunately remains entertaining.

3*
