The Whale plot
Old Tom Nickerson tells the story of how he set out to sea as a cabin boy in 1819 on the whaler The Essex. A storm and a shortage of food make it a grueling journey, but the capture of a whale improves the atmosphere on the ship. When attacked by another whale two months later, the ship sinks. With cannibals living on the nearby Society Islands, the remaining crew decides to take a 2,000-mile journey to Peru.
