For me this was a first introduction to the story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I agree with what has already been said here (lack of tension, a bit boring and long-winded). At least that applies to the 80-minute version, because that is what I saw. That is all that is negative about this film, the build-up is slow but otherwise fine, and the story is presented quite well. Especially the scenes with Mr. Hyde are well filmed and the (horror) atmosphere in the night scenes is also well conveyed.

Interesting to have seen once. More than 2.5*

John Barrymore as Dr. Henry Jekyll is committed to his fellow man and sacrifices a lot, which causes him to put his private life on the line. Martha Mansfield as Millicent Carewe has an eye on him, but because of all his work she is somewhat spared by him. The story unfolds slowly with a striking soft music score. After about 25 minutes he is tempted by discussions with Sir George Carewe (Brandon Hurst) and by a performance by Miss Gina (Nita Naldi) to do the impossible, namely develop a serum to separate the good and bad sides of himself. The change from Jekyll to Hyde is still very successful for that time: his long fingers, creepy face... a real creep! A lot of attention is paid to his change. The thought is also fascinating .... What could you do if you had a different look? There are also many other characters in the story, but they have too little content or they appear too fleetingly in the film. For example, the scene with that little boy is a very strange scene and not at all clear.

There are also quite a few different musical tunes, one more fitting than the other. 6/10

Seen: Blu-ray version.

Classic horror films or films in general that originate from the 20s and 30s are often well received by me. I can certainly appreciate them more than films that were released 40 years later. This old version of a well-known story, however, could not charm me at all, mainly because it did not really hit home.

Normally I find these kinds of films extremely charming, but that may have to do with the fact that I also saw some more expensive films before that time. This seems to have been made for a bit less money, and that is very noticeable in the result. The story that manages to captivate in the first 10 minutes quickly degenerates into a somewhat clumsy whole that never leaves a strong impression.

I found the Mr. Hyde version particularly ridiculous. Perhaps those images used to make a big impression on the viewer's nerves, but nowadays it doesn't look good anymore. Looking a bit silly into the camera with a hunched back, I can't muster much sympathy for that. If a kind of romantic plot is then added, the fun quickly ends.

I had a hard time getting through it. Perhaps I would have appreciated it more if I had the 50-minute version in mind, but in this case there was no other choice than the longest version and that one was especially long. Sometimes films of this caliber are extremely atmospheric and impressive, but here I could not recognize those beautiful images for a moment.
