"You don't play the game. It plays you."
Elliot Brindle is a meek salesman who is deeply in debt. This drives him to despair as he will soon tie the knot with his great love. One day, he gets a phone call telling him that he is playing in a hidden camera game and that he must complete 13 tasks to earn the total sum of $6.2 million. Elliot reluctantly carries out his first assignment: to swat the fly that is currently bothering him and then eat him. When thousands of dollars appear in his bank account, Elliot remains skeptical but consoles himself with the knowledge that he can always quit the game, even if he loses all the money. However, the game escalates and the assignments become more and more extreme.

Entertaining.
But not brilliant, because 13 Sins mainly relies on a fun concept that can take you far. It is a pity that the execution often leaves something to be desired. Still, I wasn't bored with this film, and that's why it gets a pass from my side.
What is immediately noticeable is that main character Webber only moderately acts. Eventually he starts to get more into his role, but those are mainly the moments with which you can really have fun as an actor. When it comes to more serious traits, he seriously falls through the basket. The other crew members aren't doing much better either, with the exception of Perlman.
The horror is scarce, it only colors the film a bit towards the end. It comes in the form of some bloody scenes, but a large part of this film is really thriller, with a nice concept. The only pity is that it doesn't want to get really exciting anywhere. There are a few intense moments, but these often only last a minute.
The film manages to entertain, but you are left with an unsatisfactory feeling. It's not funny or exciting enough. 13 Sins sticks too much to the surface and forgets to be unique in the execution. Boring cinematography and classic camera work also ensure that it doesn't want to be impressive on a visual level either.
That's enough for the entertainment, and the concept, because it's quite fun. These kinds of thrillers are mainly very simple and rely on its simplicity. A really difficult story is not necessary, but a better elaboration, and you miss that a bit here. In any case, I'm curious if Stamm can improve with upcoming horror film The Devil's Light.

Elliot Brindle [Mark Webber] has a pregnant girlfriend [Rutina Wesley], a mentally retarded brother [Devon Graye] and an ailing father [Tom Bower] who all rely on his financial support. So when he unexpectedly loses his job, he eagerly accepts a telephone offer to join a game. He has to commit 13 sins for increasingly larger amounts of money, but if he does not perform one of the assignments or does not perform one of the assignments on time, he loses all the money. Task 1? Kill a fly. It goes without saying that the other assignments are less simple. Nice take on Saw benefits from Webber's charismatic portrayal and a pleasant dose of black humor (including a nod to cult classic Weekend at Bernie's). Plus, the ever-reliable Ron Perlman and Pruitt Taylor Vince are on hand as a bold detective and an eccentric man who knows more about the game, respectively. But the more the violence escalates, the less of any logic remains. The ending is therefore easy, abrupt and unsatisfactory.
